Hard Drive Suggestion

Hello . I have an older HP 400-434 Desktop that is my daily , go to PC . After Years of use the hard drive finally failed . 

The PC has an Intel J2900 Quad Core with 8 GB DDR3 Ram . I intend to install Linux Mint on the drive .

I've never needed to replace a hard drive before and there are so many choices out there , I'm looking for suggestions for a reliable but not terribly expensive internal hard drive . I only use the PC for the basics such as reading , checking email , watching video , listening to music , etc.    I surely don't need anything larger  500 GB and am considering buying from Amazon but open to considering other sellers as well . Any suggestions for a reliable brand and/or model would be appreciated as well as brands to avoid if possible .

Given the date of your post, I would have expected someone to respond to it before this -- but since that has not happened, I will take a shot at it ...

If this were mine, instead of a 500GB hard drive, I would get a 500GB SATA SSD.  The latter costs around $50 USD and will speed up performance considerably plus, it's one less moving part to fail in the future.

If you want an HDD instead, any of the major brands (Seagate, WD, Toshiba) will do.

I buy my hardware from MicroCenter as they have good prices and excellent return policies.  I just checked their website and they have 1TB refurbished drives for $30, 1TB new drives for $50 -- it's hard to find a "small" drive like 500GB for sale these days.

Thanks for the suggestion . Using a SSD certainly makes more sense .

I wasn't aware of the MicroCenter website . Great selection and very reasonable prices . I'll give them a shot .
