I need to know what disk has failed. The error message is "Hard Disk 3 (309)".

HP Supports docs don't define what specific disk has failed using the error code you see. Check this HP Site for more info.

 

The system disk would have failed if you can't load Windows.

 

One of the PC's data drives may have failed if you can use Windows.

 

How many drives are installed in your PC?

 

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics to check each drive installed in your PC to see if you can isolate the failing drive.

 

Check your PC's hardware using HP Diagnostics as follows:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run extensive system and component tests to see if you can confirm a specific drive problem.
