Will it boot if it is connected to a Type-C port on your desktop PC?
That is the norm for connection as an external USB boot drive, whether it is a thumbdrive or external SSD type.
If it will as a standalone disk, the issue is your AsMedia hub and you will need to ask AsMedia why it won't work.
If it won't then the issue is likely to be the lack of a boot flag.
Use Disk Management (Windows key+X) to see if it is bootable.
By the way, you did not state which OS is on the external disk. That always helps.
