I have an old Envy 700-215xt desktop that I swapped into an aftermarket case. I ran into some issues when building the computer and was hoping someone could help.

1) Upgrade the CPU fan cooler - It looks like the MB monitors RPMs and won't allow for a larger fan without giving an error. Can I change this somehow? I would like to put a 120mm fan or maybe 92mm.

2) Disable the case fan - There is a case fan that gives an error if unplugged. I original tried to plug in a 120mm fan into this header and got an error as well so I am using a separate fan controller to run my case fans. Because of this I would like to just remove it. I can't find anywhere in the bios to disable it.

It looks like this computer is no longer supported so I couldn't even check for bios updates to see if I could get an option to disable the case fan or change fan sizes.

@Nickb1907,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

I can assist you.

You should be able to replace your stock cooling fan(s) with non-HP cooling fans, as long as you use 4-pin PWM fans, such as this example: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-redux-1700-high-Performance-Award-Winning-Affordable/dp/B07CG2PGY6/ref....

You cannot disable the case fan, and why should you?  The case fan is an important cooling fan to keep the air moving and assists to cool your CPU.  Again, as long as you plug in a 4-pin cooling fan, there should be no error messages whatsoever.  If you use any 4-pin PWM splitter cable(s), always make sure that the 4-pin connector is plugged in the main cooling fan -CPU or Case fans and use the 3-pin splitter connectors for additional cooling fans.

And yes, you can check if you got the most recent BIOS/software upgrades for your HP ENVY 700-215xt CTO Desktop PC as fitted with the Memphis-S motherboard (SSID: 2AF7), by going here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-envy-700-desktop-pc-series/model/5407178:

Also, you may find this HP System 700-215xt Users benchmark site useful: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-700-215xt/7474.

Hope this was helpful.

I have x6 120mm fans in the case. There is no need for this small ~90mm case fan anymore. Originally I tried to plug one of the 120mm fans into the system fan header and got error 512 - Rear chassis fan not detected. Also the system fan header is a 3pin.

Any suggestions on replacing the CPU fan/cooler?

Thank you for the link to drivers. Tried multiple ways to get this and HP's website just says the product support is discontinued and there were no software/drivers.

@Nickb1907,

All right, this is what I would do: since you cannot disable the SYS_FAN error message, I would try this 3-pin PWM AVC Model C9025S12LB PC Case Fan (90mm) cooling fan (least expensive I could find): https://www.ebay.com/itm/143967315831?_skw=C9025S12LB&epid=1438143496&itmmeta=01JDDSJ9P94THFE7NDS4Q6...:

Yes, the way HP does things makes it cumbersome at times.

The CPU_FAN requires a 4-pin PWM cooling fan:

Meaning, unless I am mistaken, any industry standard 4-pin PWM cooling fan should suffice.

I have the sys fan and it is just loose in the case to avoid getting the error. It sounds like I am stuck with this as the only solution.

You are correct on the CPU fan. I thought this gave me an error message but plugged in one of the 120mm case fans to test and it booted without issue. I just ordered this fan to close this out.

I am having trouble with the bios though. I am running windows 11 (using a work around to allow it with this older CPU) so selected windows 8.1 from the link you provided. There are 2 options for bios. I tried the HP consumer desktop PC BIOS update version 80.21 (my bios are on 80.16). I downloaded it and installed it into a folder. It left an executable (MEM_8021) which I tried to run, and it loads the cmd prompt for 1/2 a second and closes immediately. I tried running the file as admin and in compatibility mode for Windows 8 with no luck. Then I tried to put it on a flash drive and see if I could update it in the BIOS screen, but couldn't find any option in the BIOS to allow for update.

Any advice on that?

@Nickb1907,

All righty, then: here is a download link for BIOS version 80.23 Rev.A (HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update for ROM Family SSID 2AF7) and see if this works for you: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76501-77000/sp76898.exe.

If you need help with installing this version, this link will show you how: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4129273-2331498-16.

That bios file created 9 files. Sadly none of the executables will load. All load cmd prompt for 1/2 a second and close. Should I try installing this differently?

@Nickb1907,

Please show me those 9 files, like this:
