HP 800 G3 SFF

Hey community, i've bought a second hand 800 G3 SFF unit, mine came with i3-6100 and 8GB ram, i'm building a homemade NAS, since this unit has 2 3.5 HDD bays, i can start small with that space, i've already bought two HDD (WD Red plus units, in transit) and i'm using a sata port to install NAS OS (OMV for now).

I plan to make these upgrades to the unit:

- m2 2230 to 2 sata 3 adapter link

- pcie nvme adapter link (for additional nvme disk)

-  2.5gbe pcie adapter link (buying a cheap 2.5gbe switch too)

The idea is to have at least 4HDD available ports to grow the NAS, (making a hole on the case and maybe a 3d print ext case for additional HDDs), and in the future add SSD nvme pool for bigger workloads. w

The main issue / concern  is if this 180W default power supply will be able to feed more than 2 HDD? expecting to use as power input the SATA PWR cable ( is has 3 sata ports and I plan to extend it with an extension sata cable). I guess the WD Red Plus units wil be using near 2W-8W between idle/load state each one.(couldn't find any real documentation of power consumption in datasheet)

Hope NonSequitur777 appears here.

Regards.

@jesterh4t,

And appearing I do.

There are three power supply upgrades possible for your HP EliteDesk 800 G3/G4/G5 SFF platform: a 250-watt power supply (p/n: L08417-004), a 400-watt power supply (p/n: 942332-001), and a 500-watt power supply (p/n: L77487-003).

The 500-watt power supply is probably overkill, so either the 250-watt or the 400-watt power supply should be the way to go.  If you can get the 400-watt power supply for a good price, go for that one: you're bound to have plenty of power.

Kind Regards,
