HP Envy Phoenix 850-150qe
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently bought an SSD to put into my computer along with a mounting kit for 2.5" to 3.5" HDD/SSD bay.

Long story short, it did not work. I don't know if the mounting kit I bought was defective because it didn't seem like I could get the screws to actually screw in on the sides, but now I'm questioning if I need a specific adaptor/bracket to get an SSD in there. If I buy a new one, do I need special screws? Is this computer made very differently from others in the way the SSDs go in? I've never done this before on any computer and every time I try to google an answer, either nobody has had my problem, or they don't get an answer.

Okay, I managed to help myself.

The 654540-002 part worked and the fillister screws I ordered from here: https://www.mcmaster.com/#91737a105/=16k1l28 allowed the bracket to stay in place.

HP does not sell the 654540-002 part themselves. I had to buy it from a third party.

For anyone else in the future who is googling the same problem I had with no luck:

In order to get your new SSD into your HP Envy Phoenix 850-150qe, you can use the HP hard drive bracket part number 654540-002 (bought from a third party because HP does not sell it themselves for whatever dumb reason) and these Phillips head Fillister, 6-32, 1/4" screws from https://www.mcmaster.com/#91737a105/=16k1l28.

You will also need to buy a new SATA cable to connect it to your motherboard.

@yoyohayli, welcome to the forum.

What is the make/model of the SSD?  Also, it would help if you would provide a link to the SSD adapter that you bought.  I will try to help you when I have this information.

@old_geekster

The SSD is a Crucial MX500 1TB 2.5".

The adaptor was a Rosewill RX-C200P 2.5" SSD/HDD Plastic Mounting Kit for 3.5".

I already sent that adaptor back and ordered a new one that was specifically made for the Crucial MX500: the Crucial Desktop SSD Install Bracket (3.5-inch). The customer service rep for crucial INSISTS this new one will work. The only problem is I don't know if it will come with the necessary screws.

I absolutely hated the Rosewill one. I physically had to force the screws into holes that clearly lacked any sort of threading for them to grab onto. It was like I was carving away at the plastic to make room for them and I figured it was just faulty.

Okay, the Crucial Desktop SSD Install Bracket (3.5-inch) does not stay in place at all. There is no way to make it.

Running out of options and money, here. It would be nice to know what other people have used, but I have scoured the internet and can find no such information.

Your best option is to contact Crucial's Tech Support for help with this problem.  They are the experts on their products and have always been very helpful when I dealt with them.  I have mounted several SSD's into HP cases without any problems.  For future reference, Samsungs's SSDs seem to be the best all around for ease of installation; especially in HP cases and BIOS's.

You may want to try this installation guide provided by Crucial.  It appears to be very complete.

It doesn't help because their adapter is way too short depth-wise. If you were to try and fit it into an Envy Phoenix 850-150qe, you would see what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I found a different forum where someone was given the part number 654540-002 and I ordered that along with some 1/4" fillister screws.
