The DVD player will not automatically start when I insert a DVD, although in the Hardware and Sound settings I have it set for Automatic. The DVD drive (E:) is recognized, and I can see the files on it, but none are .EXEs so I don't know which to click on to try to start the DVD from Explorer. There is no AUTORUN.INF file on the DVD.
I'm running a Windows 10 HP Pavilion 590-p0054 which I bought new about 9 months ago, and have never been able to run any CDs or DVDs.

This page should help. The best way is to download a DVD app and there are a number of free as well as pay programs for that. Again the linked page should help.

Thanks, but I found a way to get the sMedio True DVD player that came with my HP desktop to work. The only way it will start is to open the DVD/CD tray before shutting down. Then do a cold boot and immediately after logging in, push the tray with the DVD in. That starts it.
I tried going to Hardware & Sound, selecting Autoplay, and checking the box to use autoplay for all media and devices, and in the DVD section I first tried setting defaults as "Play DVD" and saved it the settings. Which didn't work. So I later tried resetting to "Ask me every time" for DVDs, saved it, and that didn't work either, as it never asked me if I wanted to play the DVD when I inserted one. Thus, the only thing that has worked is what I discovered by trial and error in the first paragraph, above. That may be useful to some HP owners who are using the sMedio DVD player that came with their desktop unit.
