HP Z640 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,
I have an HP Z640 workstation, and I want to replace my graphics card with an NVIDIA 3070 Ti that requires two 8-pin power connectors.
My power supply only has a single 8-pin output, which I currently use with an adapter that splits into two 6-pin connectors, for my current GPU M4000 Quadro (1x 6-Pin PCIe power connector)

Can I use an appropriate cable to power the graphics card safely?
Does HP offer a cable that splits into dual 8-pin connectors for this purpose?

@SurgicalScience,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your HP Z640 Workstation is fitted with a 925-watt power supply. This power supply is equipped with two 6-pin PCIe power cables (V12-G1 and V12-G2), each capable to deliver 12V x 18A = 216-watt of power. That means that you can safely use 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe power adapters to power an RTX 3070 Ti.

Hi, thank you.
I connected the graphics card, but the monitors aren’t turning on. After a few seconds, the motherboard starts beeping once every second, and a red light turns on.

Can anyone help me figure out what the problem might be?

@SurgicalScience,

Please be a bit more specific.

Do you mean:

Your power supply has two 6-pin PCIe power cables, each fitted with a 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe power adapter and connected to your RTX 3070 Ti -assuming this card model has two 8-pin PCIe connectors?

If so, your card should work just fine like this HP Z640 Workstation User: HP Z640 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Hi @NonSequitur777,

Yes, what you described is exactly right regarding the power setup.

But in my case, the issue happens before I even connect power to the GPU. Even when the card is seated properly in the motherboard, and I power on the system without the PCIe power cables connected, the BIOS doesn't come up. I get a beep code and a red light on the motherboard.

So I'm wondering if the issue might be related to the card itself, even without power connected. Maybe it's causing the system to fail POST?

Thanks,

@SurgicalScience,

When you seat your graphics card without powering its PCIe 8-pin power connectors, you'll get no video signal and your PC will not function.

Make sure the GPU is in working condition, and if you can, try another graphics card to ascertain any slot (PCIe x16) and/or power supply issues.
