I have found the motherboard socket below the cage for additional storage, but there is no space for installing the SSD.  Do I need a male/female extension cable and if so where do I buy one?

The only suggestion I can offer would be to look at chapter 4, pages 25 & 26 of the service manual as well as watching the service video:

From what I can see in the illustrations and the videos the second SSD is on the edge of the motherboard (labeled as #3 on page 25) and the standoff to secure the drive is on the chassis of the PC.
