Hi, I just got a Pavilion 690 desktop with the green light strip in the middle of the front face. However, sometimes the light is on and sometimes it's off and I don't see any application on my computer to control it. Does anyone know what kind of schedule this light bar is on??

@Rbbrdcky Welcome to HP Community!
I understand that you would like to control the front light bar strip.
Unfortunately, there is no software and it not possible to control the front light bar strip.
it's system designed.

No that's not it. The light bar works fine. There was just nothing in the manual that says how it works.. Is it on whenever the computer is "thinking"? Is based on time of day? I read somewhere that it can be completely disabled in the BIOS but I don't want to kill it.. just understand how it works.. makes sense?

I understand your concern but there is no way you can disable the led's on your laptop.
However, you can try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.
Step 1
Open the Microsoft Windows Control Panel on your HP laptop computer. The Control Panel button is accessible by clicking once on the "Windows Logo" button on your HP laptop computer desktop.
Step 2
Click "Power Options."
Step 3
Click "Change Plan Settings." You will see six drop-down menus on screen—three beneath the term "On Battery" and three beneath the term "Plugged In." Click each of the drop-down menus and select the "Never" option.
Step 4
Click "Apply" to disable the LED indicators on your HP laptop computer.
Have a nice day!!

I've only noticed light bar change when the computer goes to sleep or hibernate. And as soon as I wake up it comes back on. I haven't noticed any other relations between lighting and operations. Although I do wish there was at least away to control brightness at the very least. Imo it would have been a no-brainer to put a control on it to make it breathe blink or Trace.
