AT&T fios to gateway speed always 1000MBPS. Using motherboard ethernet connection, gateway always 220 - 240 MBPS. Can I increase speed, maybe with USB-C ethernet adapter? Serial number.

Hi @KPTx, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion Desktop is experiencing a bottleneck with its onboard Ethernet connection, which is limiting your speed to 220–240 Mbps despite your AT&T gateway providing 1000 Mbps.
Steps to Improve Speed:
Check Current Ethernet Port Speed
- Your desktop’s motherboard may have a Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) port, but it could be negotiating at a lower speed (100 Mbps) due to:
- A bad or old Ethernet cable (ensure it's at least Cat 5e or Cat 6).
- The network adapter being set to 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps.
- A driver or firmware issue.
Verify Network Speed Settings
- Press Win + X → Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network Adapters, right-click your Ethernet adapter, and select Properties.
- Under the Advanced tab, look for Speed & Duplex and ensure it's set to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.
Try a Different Ethernet Cable
- Use a Cat 6 or Cat 7 Ethernet cable to rule out cable issues.
Update Ethernet Drivers & BIOS
- Visit HP’s support page for your PC model and update your network adapter drivers and BIOS.
Test with a USB-C to Ethernet Adapter
- If your PC has USB 3.0 or USB-C, a USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter (or USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter) can bypass the onboard Ethernet and may give you full 1000 Mbps speeds.
Check the AT&T Gateway
- Ensure the LAN port you're using on the AT&T gateway is indeed Gigabit-capable and not limited to 100 Mbps.
- Some gateways have specific QoS (Quality of Service) settings that could be limiting your desktop’s speed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
