This 12 year old computer is in great condition and I don't want to junk it. I already added another ram stick to get it up to 3 GB, and plan to raise it to 4 GB. Also I added a 2 TB HD, intending to leave the 160 GB drive for OS and programs while putting the data on the big drive. And I will install a 2-core processor.
The first question is if it is even possible to install 7 on this machine? How about 7-64? If so, what hoops do i need to jump through to make it work? BIOS? Drivers? ...? I don´t expect any help from HP on this but I have faith in you guys.
I am not sure if this is the proper board for my question. Thanks.

I had an old Compaq that had that same motherboard. Windows 7 will install just fine and will do a good job of finding drivers. Once the install is completed, just check Device Manager for any devices that need drivers and come back here for help. If the BIOS on the motherboard is 3.00, then that is the lastest. I think I had windows 7 64 bit, but the most memory that motheboard is claimed to run is 2GB but I had 4GB on mine and it recognized it and used it. Here is the motherboard page:

So either Windows 7 32bit or 64bit should work. Use a regular Windows 7 install disk and run a clean install
Let us know how this goes.

Hi
You have an Athlon 64 so Windows 7 64 bit OS should install. I have installed Windows 7 64 bit on an older 2003 Athlon 64.
You will have to purchase an OEM copy of Windows 7 Pro unless you have an unused OEM version or a transferable retail version.
Last time I checked you can still get Windows 7 Pro OEM on Amazon. Installing the 64 bit version of Windows would not give any performance benefits because your MB is probably limited to 4 GB of RAM.
There will be no official HP BIOS updates.
Finding drivers may be very tricky because the hardware is old.
It may work if you can get drivers.
No guarantees.
Don't want to give you a false sense of success.
I would backup the XP install on external media and make sure you can recover the OS to the hDD if the Windows 7 installations fails.

Thank you, TheOldMan, for your quick reply and good advice. It sounds a lot easier than I thought to install Windows 7 on this ancient 12 year old machine. You also helped me with my CPU question. I will let you know how these upgrades work when I get the parts installed.

Thanks, Grzwacz for your good advice. I installed Win 7 with no problems with anything including the BIOS and drivers. The machine has been working great for many months now. I also installed an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 5600+ with no problems. The computer is plenty fast enough now for my use.
