Paul, as an afterthought I tried your download link for IE9 and as expected it tells me this setup is not suitable for my machine. The IE9 64 bit link that I subsequently downloaded gave me IE7. Curiouser and curiouser.

 

I would like eventually to upgrade this Dell machine to win7, I ran an upgrade adviser which said it was possible, but no doubt untold more time wastage.

Interesting.

 

As far as upgrading to Windows 7, if you can get a copy cheaply, it might make sense to get another couple of years out of it.

 

Support for W7 ends in 2020.

New HDD arrived, installed, installing from factory instal recovery disks I'm glad I made. Disk is set up in bios as AHCI.

Paul, thank you so much for your excellent help. Mostly I'm up and running now. It's a big job recovering from a HDD failure and reinstalling everything. The windows reinstal disks I made worked fine, thank goodness, and I was able to restore my data from the backup set that was up to date to Sunday week back. Thank goodness!
