Hello Community, i have a HP Z640 Workstation with a 925W power supply and i want to upgrade my graphic cards with a RTX A5000 which uses 230Watt with 8pin connection and with a second graphics card a RTX A4000 which uses 140Watt with use 6pin.
I have two 6 pin with 5 pins who are usable connectors from the psu which are meant to supply the graphic cards…. Could i use a 6pin female to 8 pin adapter for the rtx a5000 and for the another graphic card directly to plug into the graphic card? Would it work so? I got a bit confused because the two 6 pin connection are with only 5 pin used.
Thank you very much.
Kind regards Dejan.

Hi Dejan,
if you use the original power supply, it only has two 6-pin plugs. Hence, you should use a 6-pin female to an 8-pin male adapter.
Plugging the 6-pin male from the power supply to an 8-pin splitter is not going to work (I did the same mistake myself).
By the way, no need to use identical graphics cards.
I used for a while an RTX4070 with a GTX1080 and they worked just fine together*.
Best regards,
Angelos

Hi Dejan,
I also have an HP Z640 and I recently upgraded to two RTX4070.
Regarding the 6-pin issue, you can get a 6-pin to 8-pin PCI adapter (you can search "6 pin to 8 pin pci adapter").
As the max power consumption of the RTXA5000 is quite high, I would suggest you to go for a good one, to avoid any potential fire hazard.
Keep in mind that according to the workstation's manual, page 14, the primary graphics card should be up to 225W and also, combined power consumption of all cards cannot exceed 375W. In your case, I believe this isn't going to be an issue, however, if needed you can adjust the max power consumption from your operating system using the nvidia-smi interface.
All the best,
Angelos

Update, Hi Angelo.
Today i received the Rtx A5000 with an 8pin splitter to 8 pin and 6 pin, and i tried out and failed, my workstation wont start (blinks and peeps 4 times) from the diagnostig layout on the pannel its a power supply problem.
Regards Dejan

You will find that you will probably have better success using identical video cards.
