Hello.

I recently acquired an HP elitedesk 705 g3 sff pc. Its amd pro a8- 9600, 16gb ddr4, 2 tb hdd.

Its pretty ancient now, but i was going to use it to play about with, as I havnt much computer know how.

I was going to try some low budget upgrades..

Ive seen an HP elitedesk 800 g3 LGA1151 ddr4 motherboard on sale on ebay, and was wondering if it would be a straight swop for my motherboard? .

I was then going to purchase an i7 (anyone know if it would be 6th gen or maybe later?)

Get a 512 ssd to install windows on.

Get a budget low profile single slot gpu to play some games on it.

Thats the plan. Any advice or tips would be great thanks.

Hi:

No, that motherboard will not work in your PC's case.

You would need an 800 G2 SFF motherboard (supports Intel 6th gen core processors) for it to work.

Make sure you buy a motherboard that comes with a W10 product key in the BIOS, or you will have to pay for a new W10 license and product key.

You'd have to buy a processor and perhaps other components as well.

For example, the 16 GB DDR4 memory your PC has needs to be 2133 MHz or more to work in an 800 G2 motherboard.

I think you can buy an off lease working 800 G3 SFF with an Intel 7th gen core processor for around the same money that it would cost to 'Frankenstein' yours.

Here is an 800 G3 that just needs a drive and some memory to get it running for £33.99.

The model series has a M.2 slot that supports M.2 NVMe SSD's.

Thank you Paul for the detailed reply.
If I was to purchase that pc you linked or similar, could I upgrade it to an i7 cpu?  I think the ddr4 memory I have is 2133mhz
Or if I kept my original set up and put a Rx 550 gpu in it , do you know if I could run at least 1080p on low settings on older games?

You're very welcome.

Yes, you can install an i7-7700 in the 800 G3 PC and you can use the RX550 in it as well.

However, the i7-7700 requires DDR4-2400 MHz memory, so if you want to use your existing 2133 MHz memory, you will have to install the i7-6700 processor.

The RX550 should work fine in the 800 G3 SFF if that is what you have installed in your 705 G3 SFF.

Below is the link to the 800 G3 model series' Quickspecs.

It has all the info you need to know about its capability, supported processors, graphics cards, max memory offered, etc.

Cheers,

Would the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 LGA1151 DDR4 motherboard be a direct swap for the motherboard in my HP EliteDesk 705 G3 SFF? Additionally, if I go for this upgrade, what generation of Intel i7 processor would be compatible with this motherboard, and would I need to consider any BIOS updates? Also, any recommendations for a budget low-profile single-slot GPU for light gaming on this setup?

Hi, Andy:

Please thoroughly review my first reply.

It will not work.
