Something does not make sense. Can you post a picture of the connection you are trying to make?
I am guessing you have a windows app like hyperterminal that connects through a port to your modem.
Connecting an external monitor to your system the monitor will go to sleep unless you tell windows you have a second monitor.
Also, there is the possibility that the port (hdmi, dvi, vga) you plugged the external monitor into is not functioning. If you have a video card then frequently you need to use the video port on the card and not the one that is built onto the motherboard.
Thank you for using HP products and posting to the community.

@Babygirl7 -- after a few minutes of NOT getting any "video-input" from any computer, your monitor will enter that "low-power-sleep" mode.
Does your monitor have multiple video-inputs? (VGA? DVI? HDMI?)
In that case, you need to select which of those inputs is to be the "active" input.
If the monitor is "listening" to the "wrong" input, it will "sleep".
