I've got a Z420 workstation that I'm supposed to use mainly for After Effects and 3d modelling. My current processor doesn't have AVX2 and I need to upgrade to use newer versions of After Effects. I've never upgraded a CPU before and I don't know if my motherboard can handle it; I haven't been able to find any information about it online.

Welcome to our HP community forum!
Unfortunately, a Xeon E5-1650 v4 (3.60 GHz up to 4.00 GHz, 6-Cores, 12-Threads, 140-watt TDP) is not compatible with an HP Z420 Workstation.
The best processors compatible with your Workstation would be these three options:
1.) Xeon E5-1680 v2 (3.00 GHz up to 3.90 GHz, 8-Cores, 16-Threads, 130-watt TDP)
2.) Xeon E5-1660 v2 (3.70 GHz up to 4.00 GHz, 6-Cores, 12-Threads, 130-watt TDP)
3.) Xeon E5-2687W v2 (3.40 GHz up to 4.00 GHz, 8-Cores, 16-Threads, 150-watt TDP)
And I believe, the Intel Core Ivy Bridge (Socket 2011) i7-4960X (3.60 GHz up to 4.00 GHz, 6-Cores, 12-Threads, 130-watt TDP) is also compatible with an HP Z420 Workstation.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,
