I have an HP xw4400w workstation I want to increase ram from 8 to 16gb. Says my system will only except a max of 8gb. However, I've had other systems that would go beyond that with the correct type of compatible ram. Currently, it has 4 (2gb sticks of ddr2, non-ecc, unbuffered ram), 8gb total. Adding 4, (4gb sticks of the same type of ram), it won't boot. Bios gives ram error beeps. However, will it work with 4 sticks of 4gb EEC registered, unbuffered ram due to being a workstation? Hi:
According to pages 5 & 6 of the HP Quickspecs at the link below, the max memory is 4 x 2 GB ECC, or 4 x 512 GB GB non-ECC, which obviously can't be right for the non-ECC spec.
ManualsLib - Makes it easy to find manuals online!
I recommend that you run this command to confirm how much memory your PC can support:
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
I have a dc7800 CMT with a newer chipset than yours (Intel Q35) and it only supports 4 x 2 GB of DDR2-6400 memory.

I performed the command in cmd prompt as you suggested & worked perfectly. Did the math with the results & came out with a 16GB MAX capacity, giving me exactly what I wanted to know and hoped for. Sounds like all I need to do is buy some
4 x 4 GB ECC, Unbuffered sticks & it will work. 16GB is the systems total max for ram. Thanks.
