Hi. I am not too experienced with building PC's. So I bought 2x additional RAM's last year. I specifically tried to make sure, that the RAM I buy are the same I have already installed in my HP Omen. But after several attempts, I wont manage to bring up the clock rate up to 5200 MT/s. I have made several configuration attemps but I always failed (see table below). Can you help me by either verifying that per specs it wont work or maybe if I have bought wrong components? I am thinking about buying a new set of 2x 32 GB RAM's instead, but I fear that I will buy wrong parts again where I do not get the desired 5200 MT/s out of. I figured the new RAM's which I bought are made by a different manufacturer vs. the factory RAM's.
Thanks, siviart

Hi @SIVIART,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I can completely understand how frustrating and confusing this can feel, especially when you've carefully matched your RAM, yet can’t reach the clock speeds you expected. It’s great that you’ve taken the time to test different configurations — you’ve done exactly what a seasoned builder would.
After reviewing this, I’d like to clarify something important:
The link you shared appears to be for a different HP Omen model than the one you’re using. Your specific HP Omen system officially supports a maximum of 32 GB of RAM. While it might physically detect more or different modules, it won’t be able to run them optimally, and certainly not at 5200 MT/s.
Here’s the situation:
- Your Kingston kit is rated for 5200 MT/s, but only via XMP (Extreme Memory Profile), which requires motherboard BIOS support for XMP.
- HP’s OMEN desktops, including the 40L GT21-1000i, don’t support enabling XMP profiles — the BIOS is locked to JEDEC standard speeds, which in this case is DDR5-4800 MT/s.
- So, even though your RAM is capable of 5200 MT/s, your system will only run it at 4800 MT/s, because:
- That’s the maximum officially supported JEDEC speed for DDR5 in this system.
- XMP can’t be activated in HP’s BIOS.
For best stability and performance:
- We recommend using either 1×16 GB or 1×32 GB stick, rather than mixed or larger dual-channel kits.
- Mismatched modules — even if the specs look similar — often don’t sync up to high clock speeds due to subtle differences in manufacturers, timings, and voltages.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Dear VikramTheGreat
Thank you so much for taking your time and looking into my case.
Interestingly I managed to select XMP 5200 profile in BIOS with my 2x factory RAM's installed and it indeed seemed to work when I checked GPU-Z and Task Manager after rebooting. I also rebooted again to see what was configured in BIOS and it also said 5200 MT/s. How can this be?
I am a bit irritated, since in the online-specification of my "OMEN 40L Desktop GT21-1739nz Bundle PC (7L4Z7EA)" it says, that it supports up to 128 GB of memory. I consulted this online-specifications before I bought additional RAM, so I thought this is save to buy more RAM :-). I had issues with a game as I noticed my RAM runs constantly at the limit of 32 GB with the old configuration (2x factory RAM's).
So according to your experience, even since this is a dual channel architecture, you are suggesting to only use one slot?
If I would want to purchase 1x 32 GB RAM then, can you tell me what specs I specifically have to look out for? Do I have to make sure that it is specified with a JEDEC Standard clock speed of 4800 MT/s? I mean do I have to buy 4800 instead of 5200 now? All my RAM's are specified with 5200 XMP as you pointed out. By quickly checking the vendor I usually buy my stuff from, I could not find 4800 specced 1x 32 GB Kingston Fury RGB (the ones I am using), only 5200 rated. In addition the RAM specification says XMP 3.0 (so no JEDEC). I have linked it here: https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/kingston-fury-beast-rgb-1-x-32gb-5200-mhz-ddr5-ram-dimm-ram-210...
Do you know if I buy this that it will be save to operate at 4800? Or I will just remove the 2x new RAM's I bought and go back to my original 2 x 16 GB config with 4800 MT/s. Is the 1 x 32 setup so much better?
Lot of questions, sorry, but thank you already in advance for helping me out one more time.
Regards, siviart

Hello Garp
Thank you for taking over. I understood my system is capped at 128 GB, not 32 GB.
Vikram pointed out (Messag 04-19-2025 07:37 AM), that HP Omen / BIOS do not support XMP profile. Also he suggested to run 1x 16 GB or 1x 32 GB. Can you confirm, that its better to only run 1x slot and also that it doesnt support XMP?
I am confused about the clock standards and since its a dual channel archtitecture, I always thought its better to run 2x slots. Also I am currently running 5200 XMP with 2x slots (the original 2x RAM's which were installed by HP) ... but dont manage to run 5200 with the 4x 16 GB setup (2x additional RAM I bought). So somehow these 2x additional bought RAM's do not work for 5200, although they are rated 5200.
I would generally like to understand, what I need to look out for when buying a new set of RAM (2x 32 GB) as obviously with the 2x 16 additional RAM I have bought, I dont manage to bring the speed up to 5200 MT/s.
Greatly appreciated, SIVIART
