Prodesk 400 G3

I have bought an HP Prodesk 400 G3 Microtower PC—Intel Core i5-7500t 2.50GHz refurbished, and would it be possible to upgrade it to an i7-7700 or i7-7700T?

It has a 7th gen 1151 CPU in it, so in theory jumping from an i5 to i7 should be a piece of cake?

I'm curious about your thoughts, as official documentation says it only runs 6th gen CPU's?

It should be here Friday so, hopefully, later on, I can post screenshots of the bios and Windows system information.

Kind regards,

Wonder

PS; What's the latest bios and patch for spectre and meltdown mitigations for the Prodesk 400 G3?

When documentation shows a specific generation of processor that means there must be a specific chipset matching it.

Jumping a processor generation is, as far as I am aware, not a viable option.

6th Gen processors and chipsets use DDR3 memory and your PC has DDR4 memory. It is a no go.

@Wonder-Zebra,

@erico is correct: according to: Maintenance and Service Guide HP ProDesk 400 G3 MT Business PCHP ProDesk 480 G3 MT Business PCHP Pro..., your HP ProDesk 400 G3 Microtower PC cannot (well, is not supposed to) be upgraded with a 7th gen processor.

However, if it is the case that your desktop is fitted an i5-7500T -a 7th gen Intel processor after all, that would be a most interesting factoid!

If you don't mind, please run the UserBenchMark performance test (https://www.userbenchmark.com/resources/download/UserBenchmarkInstaller.exe) on your rig, and provide the link, so we can take a look at it.

Speaking of UserBenchMark, the fastest processor that shows up (over 800 User entries) for the HP ProDesk 400 G3 Microtower is an i7-6700KHP ProDesk 400 G3 MT Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Interestingly, your desktop has the Intel H110 chipset, which, in principle, does allow 7th gen Intel processors: CPUs supported by the Intel H110 chipset (eatyourbytes.com), assuming HP allowed it.

Hi there, for all intents and purposes, I would say you are correct.

I am yet to receive the machine, it is due to arrive late this week or early next week. Once I hook it up to a monitor and keyboard, I'll do the bench marking.

 Here is the link to the system I've bought. https://reebelo.com.au/products/hp-prodesk-400-g-3-microtower-pc-intel-core-i-5-7500-t-2-50-g-hz-128...

Either they made a typo or its a g4, but I suspect a typo now.

I've emailed them and await their response.

I have an i7-7700 coming in the mail , so I might as well install it and see what error response I get or see if it works.

Anyway, I will try to keep people up to date as much as possible as this progresses.

Wish me luck 🙂

Cheers,

@Wonder-Zebra,

Definitely wishing you luck -who knows, stranger things have been recorded in this Forum!

Most likely the Seller made a typo: an i5-7500T processor has a base frequency of 2.70 GHz up to 3.30 GHz, whereas an i5-6500T has a base frequency of 2.50 GHz up to 3.10 GHz.

As the link shows: "i5-7500T 2.50GHz", the 2.50 GHz gives it away: it is most likely an i5-6500T.
