@Jeepmanic , welcome to the forum.
The truth is, a computer is only as good as its weakest link. The weakest link in your computer is the motherboard. All newer video cards require UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard/Legacy BIOS: https://www.howtogeek.com/175649/what-you-need-to-know-about-using-uefi-instead-of-the-bios/. HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012. Your computer was released 06-June-2011. The BIOS can't be upgraded to UEFI. The newer video cards require at least 400W to operate properly. The power supply unit (PSU) in your computer is only 250W. The memory is at the maximum of 8 GB.
Here is the Product Specifications page for the computer: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-p7-1000-desktop-pc-series/5080737/model/5110014/doc...
You can look at the section titled "Processor upgrade information" for a list of compatible processors. The i7-2600S would be a good upgrade from your i3-2100.
Here are the specifications for each from Intel:
The best upgrade that you could do for a small investment is a SSD boot drive. Here is a HP Knowledge Base article to explain how to upgrade your hard drive (HDD) to a SSD: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Knowledge-Base/Upgrading-Desktop-to-a-SSD/ta-p/7304861
I like Samsung SSD's. They seem to work the best with a HP BIOS. I will never have a computer without a SSD boot drive again.
All of the above are my opinions. You have to make the final decision on what you want to do. Personally, I would save my money and buy a new computer. The least expensive gaming computer would be light-years ahead of your computer. You can't even imagine the difference unless you see it.
