Hello,
I am currently using an HP 280 G2 MT desktop with the following specifications:

  • Motherboard: HP 2B5E

  • Current Processor: Intel Core i5-6400 (6th Gen, LGA 1151)

  • BIOS Version: AMI A0.58, dated 04/28/2021

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)

I am planning to upgrade my processor and would like to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
Could you please let me know:

  1. Does my motherboard with BIOS version AMI A0.58 support the Intel Core i7-7700 (7th Gen) processor?

Your assistance will help me ensure the upgrade goes smoothly.
Thank you!

why not check the information that HP posts before posting? as i recall the motherboard should support 6th/7th gen

and several websites also say this

(note: you can use the program cpu-z to see your board# if you don't know how to find out)

click on the "Product specifications"

and enter your system serial number

or read the specs as a downloadable or online pdf file

@DGroves,

Your response caught my attention, because the HP 280 G2 Microtower is one of my options for a future upgrade project.

As I understand it, the HP 280 G2 Microtower with the Intel H110 chipset was originally designed just for 6th Gen Skylake CPUs, but as you showed with your first link ("Supports 6th and 7th gen Intel chips"), 7th Gen Kaby Lake processors can be supported if the BIOS is updated to a version that adds Kaby Lake support.

And here it gets interesting: none (as in zip) of any of the HP 280 G2 MT Userbenchmark Users as found here, are shown with a 7th gen processor.  However, there are some HP 280 G2 SFF Users who did install a 7th gen Intel Core processor, such as this User with an i7-7700https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/59205213.  I did, however, notice that there are two SFF SSID motherboard versions: 8425 (compatible with 7th gen) and 82C9 (not compatible with 7th gen).

As far as I was able to ascertain, there is only one MT motherboard version with SSID: 2B5E.

So, what the OP could do is just try installing an i7-7700 and see what happens.

If the OP succeeds, it would be the first documented HP 280 G2 Microtower User having done so -at least as far as Userbenchmark data is concerned!

[EDIT:] The OP should update the BIOS to the latest version (A0.58 Rev.A) as found here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-280-g2-microtower-pc/8741823.

Kind Regards,
