HP ENVY Desktop - TE01-0014
Microsoft Windows 11

I want to upgrade my CPU from i5 8th gen to i7 9th gen while also increasing RAM to 32 GB.  The specifications sheet says I can go to an i7-9700 3GHz, 4.7GHz w.turbo boost (Coffee Lake -R) 65w, socket type LGA1151 and RAM DDR4-UDMIMM 288 pin sockets for RAM.  I have a H370 chipset motherboard.  Will this be okay.  Will I need to do anything else like my BIOS? Does this i7 also include an integrated graphics like the i5 (Intel UHD 630)? Thank you!

Hi @NonSequitur777

Thanks for the input.

Interesting, did not know "K" CPUs will work on this MB.

Thought the BIOS would not identify the "K" CPU or you might have a VRM problem causing system instability.

Live and learn.

Hi @DomingoM

The I7-9700 should work since HP is indicating MB/BIOS support using the factory BIOS.

The 9700 will have integrated graphics. The 9700F will not have graphics. A 9700K will not work.

RAM upgrades with this MB can be tricky. Some RAM modules may only run at JEDEC specs (DDR4-2133 on a H370 chipset). Some RAM  modules may cause a POST failure.

It is not recommended to mix memory modules.

I would look at Crucial Memory for the best compatibility.

@NonSequitur777 may be able to provide additional memory upgrade options for your PC.

@DomingoM,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Thank you, @Bill_To, for inviting me to throw in my 2-cent's worth.

Your HP ENVY Desktop - TE01-0014 (6YQ60AA) is fitted with the Rother motherboard (SSID: 8653), and can be fitted with up to 2 x 16GB DDR4 PC4-21300, 2666 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, UDIMM, 288-pin RAM sticks.

You could install DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz RAM, which will down throttle to 2666 MHz.

Here are the best-performing RAM modules for your rig -always use identical pairs to achieve best RAM performance:

Samsung M378A2K43CB1-CTD 2x16GB
Samsung M378A2K43DB1-CTD 2x16GB
Crucial CT16G4DFRA266.M16FR 2x16GB
Kingston 9905734-180.A00G 2x16GB
Micron 16ATF2G64AZ-2G6E1 2x16GB
Hynix HMA82GU6JJR8N-VK 2x16GB
Kingston KF2666C16D4/16G 2x16GB

Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CTD 2x8GB
Kingston KF2666C16D4/8G 2x8GB

Processor upgrade:

As @Bill_To mentioned: i7-9700 (with integrated graphics) or i7-9700F (without integrated graphics).  These CPUs have a 65-watt TDP.

Even though the manual as per: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-desktop-pc-te01-0000i/29014358/model/31046761/document/..., stipulates that only processors with, and I quote: "TDP: up to 65 W" are compatible, this is not accurate. Your motherboard happily accepts 95-watt processors as well, including:

i5-8600K

i5-9600K

i5-9600KF
i7-9700K

i7-9700KF

DISCLAIMER: Obviously, given their higher TDP, these processors run considerably hotter under load than 65-watt processors.  If you were to use any of the aforementioned CPUs, you need to upgrade your CPU heatsink.

Lastly, upgrade your power supply. The Rother motherboard is compatible with the 400-watt p/n: L04618-800 (one PCIe 6+2-pin power cable) and the 500-watt L05757-800 (one 6+2-pin PCIe & one 6-pin PCIe power cables).  These power supplies are available online, say through eBay.

Hope this stream of consciousness was helpful.

Kind Regards,

@Bill_To,

HP has their reasons not to promote high-powered (gaming) "K/KF" processor compatibility in office PCs.

Here is one example of an HP ENVY TE01-0xxx desktop (Rother motherboard) fitted with an i5-9600K: HP ENVY TE01-0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Please check this Thread

You might have some alternative memory upgrade options for @TheNoWhereKing .

I suggested Crucial memory.

Thank you!  So if I understood correctly, there will be no need to mess with the BIOS when I install the new CPU?

Thank you!  The i7-9700 comes with a new heat sink and is at 65W.  Do I really need to upgrade to power supply with this one, or will it be alright as is?

HP Recommended

Hi @DomingoM

You should not have to do anything with the BIOS.

The existing power supply should be good to go using the 9700.
