Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Your son's PC can only be powered by an HP proprietary power supply.
The power supply of your HP Desktop M01-F1xxx as fitted with the BakerMS2 motherboard (SSID: 8768) -please verify*, can be upgraded up to a 500-watt power supply with p/n: L05757-800 or the smaller-sized 901759-013.
Possibly, even a 650-watt power supply could be compatible with p/n: L57253-003 / L36049-003. If you were to try this power supply, please purchase it via an eBay Seller who allows for returns if (in the unlikely event) it does not work like this purchase option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/357160627469?_skw=L57253-003&itmmeta=01JYFTRST2R10F2HK8JT605E3N&hash=item53....
However, if you are aiming for a "low end gaming setup", a 400-watt power supply upgrade with p/n: L69242-800 / L04618-800 would likely be sufficient -good to power smaller-sized (dual fan) graphics cards such as up to the GTX 1660 Super, RTX 3050, or an RTX 4060. These 400-watt power supplies can also be purchased via eBay or even Amazon.
* Please type in: System Information, and click on the System Information app, and look to the right of "BaseBoard Product" -it will give you the motherboard's 4-character code.
Kind Regards,
