Hello. I am trying to install a PCIe M2 SSD (Samsung evo 1TB) on a HPZ440. Theese should be able to do so, if im correct. I am using a non-HP pcie-M2 adapter and not the Turbo drive by HP. This is mounted on the fourth pcie slot from top. How do I verify that its identified in BIOS? When trying to install Win 10 from a USB it wont boot into Win installation process, just returning a black screen saying "Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key". Is there any setting in BIOS I have to change for it to see the PCIe SSD? The boot order in BIOS have USB as the first, so it should boot from it. Or is it that it requires a real HP Turbo drive in order to work?

I bought this computer second hand without any HDD and I believe it was used with a SATA-disk before.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

Best/

Anders

Ok. I figured it out. My installation USB was bad. Made a new one and now all works. Thank you for all help and tips anyways.

Hi @BergAndy

if you are using a PCIe adapter for NVMe disks, you cannot use the disk to install windows and it will not be seen in the BIOS, you can only use it as a storage drive.

Thank you for the reply. Thats too bad, Guess I misunderstood it would be compatible with NVME Ssd. But it is possible to boot from the turbo drive Ssd from HP? So my only option is a SATA then?

The Z turbo unit may be replaced by purchasing the correct part number that is original HP. Otherwise you can use SATA SSD disks.

@BergAndy,

@resistencia, not to be disagreeable, but you can install an M.2 NVMe SSD in an HP Z440 Workstation as the primary (boot) drive.

The HP Z440 Workstation was one of my upgrade projects, and its performance benchmarks can be seen here: HP Z440 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark:

Ok, that sounds interesting. How did you do it?

@BergAndy,

Using PCIe to M.2 NVMe SSD adapters, such as the one you can see in this YouTube video:
