Hello @MerlinTX, and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Installing a second hard drive in your OMEN 40L is a great way to expand storage. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you locate the harness and complete the installation:

What You’ll Need:

  • A 3.5" or 2.5" SATA hard drive or SSD
  • A SATA data cable (not always pre-installed)
  • A SATA power connector (usually labeled P5, P6, or P7)
  • A mounting bracket or tray (if not already present)

Steps to Install the Second Hard Drive:

Open the Case

  • Power off the PC and unplug it.
  • Remove the glass side panel by pressing the release latch at the rear and sliding it off.
  • If needed, remove the right-side panel to access the drive bay.

Locate the Drive Bay

  • The OMEN 40L has a dedicated bay for a second 3.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD.
  • If a bracket is missing, you may need to purchase one compatible with your chassis.

Check for Power Connectors

  • Look for unused SATA power connectors from the PSU labeled P5, P6, or P7. These are wide connectors and typically bundled near the drive bays.

Check for SATA Data Ports

  • Inspect the motherboard for available SATA ports. Most OMEN 40L models have extra SATA headers.
  • If no data cable is pre-installed, you’ll need to purchase a standard SATA data cable.

Mount the Drive

  • Secure the drive into the tray using screws or grommets.
  • Connect the SATA power cable and SATA data cable to the drive.
  • Plug the other end of the data cable into the motherboard.

Close the Case and Boot

  • Reattach the panels.
  • Power on the PC and enter BIOS (usually by pressing F10 during boot) to confirm the drive is detected.
  • Format the drive in Windows via Disk Management.
