Hi.

I have a Hp pavillion gaming pc with one X1PCIEXP2 slot available, I want to add an extra SSD. Do I need an adapter? Or can I plug the SSD to the X1PCIEXP2 slot.
If I need an adaptor, which one? I tried googling but couldn't figure it out.
Thanks.

hi

Nothing certain, but I've read articles, mentioning that HP motherboard amd b550a chipset, won't support pcie 4 .0
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/dghxdi/this_prebuilt_at_bestbuy_has_an_asrock_b550/f3de36u/?co...

As for my opinion
If you can change the original drive, possibly by a larger one, you can leave it at that...
The choice of the pcie, as not seen many returns on this subject, I would advise against
Will it work or not, you have a graphics card, is there enough space, for cooling, what would really be the advantage?
If your current configuration 1 hdd / 256 gb is not sufficient, maybe only with another m2 512, or even more, will that be more than enough?

@noisemagician2 -- which "type" of SSD do you have?

Is the one that connects to a "M.2" socket in your computer's motherboard, quite similar to how RAM  fits into its socket?  Or, do you have a SSD that physically is the same size as a "laptop" disk-drive.

For the latter type, the least-expensive adapter is this one:

Into it, mount your 2.5-inch wide SSD, and then slide the adapter into a 3.5-inch wide drive-bay, assuming that you have a spare drive-bay. Connect a power cable and a data cable.

Done!

SAMSUNG MZVLB256HBHQ-000H1 is my SSD, I have an extra slot but I don't know if it will fit in the slot it's an X1PCIEXP2 slot.
It has one data lane.   What is a M.2 socket,  I used Speccy to look up how many slots I have left to use and it says X1PCIEXP2.
This SSD is my boot SSD, I don't want to replace it just buy and add another one.
Thanks for the response, do you have any solutions?

hi

HP Pavilion Gaming - TG01-0450nd

1 TB HDD storage; 256 GB SSD storage

HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Erica

are you talking about this computer?
if so, you may be mentioning the second m2 slot?
in which case, it is impossible, it is for the wifi card, which is already in place

https://www.delock.de/infothek/M.2/M.2_e.html

  • One M.2 socket 1, key A
  • One M.2 socket 3, key M for SSD (PCIe x2)

no ssd m2 possible here

  • One PCIe x16 socket
  • One PCIe x1 socket

or you mention pci 1x solt?

in which case, you will need an adapter, or a suitable m2 ssd?

If you have space, you can try a sata SSD, or replace the HDD
Otherwise, no choice, replace the original m2 SSD, which is quite small

@noisemagician2 -- What is a M.2 socket

It is the socket that accepts that stick that you showed in the image that you posted.

There are 2 types of M.2 sockets -- one accepts only a M.2 WiFi adapter, and one only accepts a memory-stick such as yours.

Depending on your motherboard, there may be only 1 M.2 socket, or "one-of-each-type", or maybe 2 sockets that accept memory-sticks.

There are 2 types of SSD devices -- either a 2.5-inch wide unit that is the same dimensions as a typical "laptop" disk-drive, or the type of "stick" as in the image you posted. That adapter "tray" that I referenced is for the 2.5-inch wide SSD.

Thank you, this was helpful.

What I am trying to figure out now is which version of PCI-e I have. I tried a couple of software to identify but I can't seem to find this information.  I used HWINo64 and I think the port is version 4 but I am not sure.

Depending on which version I have I want to either add another SSD. Placing my current SSD in the pci-e x1 which has a read speed of 1400MB and buying a 3000MB or higher SSD in the current m.2 x16 slot.

If I have a version lower version than 3.0 PCI-e x1 then it's better just to replace the current SSD without adding a second one since I can't take advantage of faster data lanes.

What do you think of this, any advice?
