Hi @Dja79
Welcome to the HP Forum.
It could have been a mistake if you connected SATA power to the drives while the MB was energized.
It is not a mistake if your PC's MB provides SATA power to drives as opposed to having SATA power delivered to the drives directly from the power supply. Again, the PC must be off, and the MB cannot be energized when making any connections to the MB.

Thank you Bill_To for your response, yes my motherboard has 2 sata power (4-pins) the SATA PWR1 and the SATA PWR2, so I bought 2 pieces of 4-pins-to sata connector online. And then I connect one sata connector from the motherboard sata power directly to the CDDrive sata power and the other one directly to the Harddisk sata power. But when I turn on the computer I smell smoke burned and there's no more power in the CDDrive and Harddisk. The BIOS still can boot but no system disk anymore. What do you think the problem is?

Hi @Dja79
My pleasure.
Very sorry to see this happening to two different drives at the same time.
I can only guess both SATA cables were bad, which is very unusual, if all residual MB power had been drained prior to connecting the SATA cables.
The PC must be off and disconnected from AC power when connecting or disconnecting: components or cables to and from the MB.
This is a very unusual and unfortunate event.

Thank you very much Bill_To, I also suspect that the fault is in the bad sata cable that I bought. I feel really sad and angry because I lost everything in my harddisk. I don't know if I can still recover data in my harddisk, its my problem now. Anyway, thank you very much Bill_To for your response.

Hi @Dja79
My pleasure.
You could try the drive in a different PC as a data drive but it does not look good if this drive has been cooked.
I don't know if I would connect this drive to a different PC. You don't want to potentially damage a second PC.
