HP Z840 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ebay is offering used Xeon 2699 V4 for a reasonable price, but the 2696 V4 looks much more enticing. However, there is little information on the 2696 other than it is/was an OEM only part comparable or even better than the 2699.

The Hp Z840 whitepaper and configurator do not list the 2696 as compatible, but I see no reason why it should not work.

Has anyone tried this configuration with success, or is there going to be a problem ?

@DrMutty,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Yes, the Xeon E5-2696 v4 is a viable option for your HP Z840 Base Model Workstation as seen here: HP Z840 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

But the 2696 v4 is not the most powerful processor available for your workstation.

That distinction is left to the Xeon E5-2699 v4 as per: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-Z840-Workstation/10342.

Interestingly, the 2696 v4 is not mentioned here: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Xeon/E5-2699_v4.html, but as shown IS compatible with the HP Z840 Workstation.

The red outlined processors are all compatible with your HP Z840 Workstation.

Hope this was helpful.

From its specs

            https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04505606#AbT1

You can have following options

  • Intel Xeon E5-2620v3 2.4 1866 6C 1stCPU
  • Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 2.4 1866 8C 1stCPU
  • Intel Xeon E5-2637v3 3.5 2133 4C 1stCPU
  • Intel Xeon E5-2620v3 2.4 1866 6C 2ndCPU
  • Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 2.4 1866 8C 2ndCPU
  • Intel Xeon E5-2637v3 3.5 2133 4C 2ndCPU

Using the following configuration

          https://zworkstations.com/products/z840/

I can't see the Xeon 2699 V4 on the list.

Regards.

Thanks, I had a feeling it should be okay/ However, OEM systems like the HP Z840 (or Dell,Lenovo etc) sometimes have hardware whitelists or other firmware limitations. I can get 2 of these CPU for under £500 on Ebay right now (something crazy like £9000 when first released) which seems cheap, but I'd still have felt dumb if they didn't work after installing them.

Thanks for the assistance.
