HP Pavilion p6670t CTO Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I've hooked up a usb powered video splitter & I want to avoid having to power it on first & I don't want

to leave the splitter powered on all the time. I know I can switch the splitter but I'd rather avoid that as well.

(If the tower is powered up before the splitter is the monitor(s) will not have a signal/ display.)

Tall order ?    I  hope not.

Thanks !

Hi @SL58,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you're using a USB-powered video splitter with your HP Pavilion p6670t Desktop PC, and you're experiencing an issue where the display is not detected if the splitter is not powered on before the PC boots. We appreciate the clarity in your explanation, and we're here to help.

To improve your experience, here are a few solutions:

  1. Power the Splitter First
    • We recommend ensuring that the USB-powered splitter is fully powered before turning on your PC. This allows proper detection of the connected display devices during the system's POST (Power-On Self-Test).

  2. Use a Separate Power Source
    • If you prefer not to power on the splitter manually each time, consider connecting it to an independent USB power adapter (wall charger). This keeps the splitter powered regardless of the PC's state.

  3. Enable USB Power in BIOS (If Available)
    • Some HP systems may offer a BIOS setting to keep USB ports powered while the system is off. You can check this by restarting your PC and pressing F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
    • Look for settings like “USB Charging” or “Always-On USB” and enable them, if present.

  4. Consider a Powered Splitter with EDID Support
    • While not an HP accessory, splitters that include EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) emulation may help maintain a persistent signal between your PC and the monitor, even during boot.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for chiming in VTG.

As I mentioned I know I have to power the splitter 1st.

I put it on a switch (USB power adapter) for now until I check bios USB options for availability. Thank you for that !

I'll do some research on my tower 1st to see if I have that option.

& get a load of this ! : I tried an EDID splitter & what it did when powering on/off the 2nd video display was

relocate some of my desktop shotcuts !!  Splitter feedback to PC tower imo !! Not good !

Is that WEIRD or what ?!!     Any thoughts ?

The splitter I'm using now is working great.

Thanks again for the input.

Cheers !!    Cheers !!.gif

Hi @SL58,

Glad to hear things are mostly running smoothly now — and yep, sometimes it's these little edge behaviours that make tech… "fun." 😅

Take care and have a good day.
