Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I have had the hp pavilion for over 2 years now and one day the touchpad stopped working. It’s like it doesn’t exist anymore and isn’t in the device manager (there isn’t even a mice option for a driver). It also does not appear in settings.
I have tried everything I have seen online, (through the hp website and other community websites, along with YouTube videos) to find a solution.  I have tried everything from restarts, checking hardware changes and I even reset my laptop just for nothing to have changed. I recently saw a video about downloading drivers from the hp website but it would always say I don’t have the os for it even though my laptop is up to date. I even downloaded the new powershell and that didn’t work either.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I’ve tried contacting hp through messages and call and they didn’t help.

Hi @Svt17,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried many common troubleshooting steps without success. Since the touchpad is not appearing in Device Manager or Settings, this points to a deeper hardware or software issue. Here are a few additional steps you can try.

Check the Function Key

  • Many HP laptops have a function key (usually F6, F7, or F9) that enables or disables the touchpad. Make sure you haven’t accidentally disabled it. You can press Fn + F6 (or the correct key for your model) to toggle the touchpad back on.

Check the BIOS Settings

  • Sometimes, the touchpad may be disabled in the BIOS. To check:
    1. Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
    2. Look for a setting related to the touchpad (it might be under Advanced or Integrated Peripherals).
    3. Ensure the touchpad is enabled.
    4. Save and exit the BIOS and check if the touchpad works.

Device Manager (Hidden Devices)

  • It's possible the touchpad driver is hidden or missing in Device Manager. Try the following:
    1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    2. Click on View in the top menu and select Show hidden devices.
    3. Look for Mice and other pointing devices. If you see the touchpad listed (it may show as "Synaptics" or "ELAN"), try updating the driver.
    4. If the touchpad is not there, right-click Human Interface Devices and check for any related devices (like HID-compliant touchpad). If you find one, update or reinstall the driver.

Reinstall Touchpad Driver via HP Support Assistant

  • Since the drivers on the HP website didn’t work, try using HP Support Assistant, which automatically detects and installs the correct drivers for your system.
    1. Download and install HP Support Assistant from the HP website.
    2. Run the program and check if it recommends installing or updating any touchpad drivers.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • Since you've already reset the laptop, if the touchpad still isn’t recognized, there might be a hardware issue. If possible, try connecting a USB mouse and test if the laptop recognizes it (to confirm the USB ports are working). If it does, this might indicate that the touchpad itself is faulty.

Use the HP Recovery Tool (Advanced)

  • If the reset didn’t fix it and the touchpad is still missing, you can try the HP recovery tool to repair your system:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F11 during boot to enter HP Recovery.
    2. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and choose Startup Repair.
    3. If the system detects issues, it might fix missing or corrupted drivers automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
