@Jamie2191,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Given the nature of the problem -the laptop casing separating from the screen and back panel -this is likely due to broken hinges or chassis damage. Since the laptop is just over a year old, it may still be covered under HP’s standard 2-year warranty in the UK, depending on the specific purchase terms.

Recommended Steps:

1. Check Warranty Status:

Since this issue appears to be a hardware defect, HP may cover it under warranty. You should:

  • Check their warranty status on HP’s website by entering your serial number.
  • If it’s still under warranty, contact HP Support for a potential free repair.

2. Avoid DIY Repairs:

  • Opening the laptop to attempt repairs could void the warranty and may worsen the issue.
  • Since the hinges might be failing, forcing the lid open and closed can cause display cable damage or further structural failure.

3. Contact HP Support (UK-Specific):

4. Temporary Precautions (If Warranty Expired):

If out of warranty and waiting for repairs, you can:

  • Use the laptop on a flat surface and avoid closing the lid.
  • Stop forcing it open and shut -this will prevent further damage to the hinges and display cables.
  • Consider a third-party laptop repair service if HP support is unavailable or too costly.

Final Advice:

Since the issue is getting worse, you should contact HP ASAP before more components (e.g., display, cables) are affected. If the warranty has expired, a professional repair service is the safest option. In my opinion, self-repair is not recommended due to the complexity of hinge and chassis fixes.

Kind Regards,
