Hi @Tk154,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop isn’t restarting properly and you suspect changes were made to the reboot function, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Force Restart the Laptop

  1. Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the laptop completely powers off.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.

Check Startup Settings in Windows

If your laptop turns on but doesn’t restart as expected:

  1. Access Advanced Boot Options:
    • If the laptop is stuck in a restart loop, press the F8 or Shift + F8 key repeatedly during boot to enter the advanced boot menu.
    • If it boots normally, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and click on Restart now under "Advanced startup."
  2. Restore Default Startup Settings:
    • Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup settings.
    • Select the option to reset or adjust boot settings to their defaults.

Check Power and Restart Options in Windows

  1. Press Windows Key + R, type control, and hit Enter to open the Control Panel.
  2. Go to Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Ensure that the Restart option is enabled under shutdown settings.

Undo Recent Changes to Reboot Functionality

If you recently modified reboot functions:

  • Open the Command Prompt (search for cmd in the Start menu and run it as administrator).
  • Run the following command to reset default boot settings:

bcdedit /set {default} bootstatuspolicy IgnoreAllFailures
bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled Yes

  • Restart your laptop and see if the issue resolves.

Perform a System Restore

If the issue started recently, a System Restore can revert your laptop to a previous state:

  1. Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
  2. Follow the prompts to select a restore point and apply it.

Perform a Hard Reset

If none of the above works:

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Disconnect all peripherals (including power adapter).
  3. Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power adapter and try starting the laptop again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
