Hi HP Support,

I’m facing a problem with my HP laptop — it starts overheating and slowing down whenever I run multiple apps or stream content. For example, while testing video playback through (Edited URL) the system temperature spikes and the fan runs constantly.

Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • CPU usage jumps above 90% even with light tasks.

  • The fan stays on high speed for long periods.

  • Performance drops significantly until I restart.

I’ve already updated BIOS, drivers, and Windows, but the issue remains. Could this be related to hardware cooling or power settings?

Any help or diagnostic steps would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Kathy

@kathybotlar, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Power Settings

Right-click the battery icon in the bottom right corner.

Select Power Options.

Set the plan to Balanced or HP Recommended.

In Advanced power settings, make sure Processor power management is set to 99% and System cooling policy is set to Active.

Clean the Laptop’s Vents

Use compressed air to clean out any dust from the cooling vents and fans.

Make sure the laptop's fan is spinning properly.

Check for Background Programs

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

End any unnecessary programs using too much CPU (like 80% or more).

Run a full virus scan to rule out malware.

Update Drivers & BIOS

Open HP Support Assistant and check for any available updates, especially BIOS and drivers for your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
