How can I locate the hard drive. I’ve taken the computer to bits but just can’t find it.

Your PC may have come with one of those M.2 SSD's 'gumstick' type drives.

 

This video will show you the location of this device and how to remove and replace it.

Here are some images of what an M.2 SSD looks like. This is a "solid state drive". It has no moving parts. SSDs are also faster than a HDD.
