Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I've never looked into upgrading a PC at all. For the most part it handles everything I ask of it, however, I recently got a game that apparently my graphics can't handle. I'm looking into upgrading the graphics card and I'm hoping I don't have to go down a rabbit hole to do so. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've watched videos on YouTube and read a number of articles, I'm still lost.

It's an HP Envy 700-414

@Kankkunen,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Your HP ENVY 700-414 Desktop PC (J4V91AA) is very much upgradeable, and in my opinion would be a fun project!

According to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04453446, your desktop is fitted with the HP Memphis-B (Megatron) motherboard with SSID: 2AF7, which is 24-pin ATX-power enabled.  Meaning, that if you need to, you could upgrade your stock 460-watt ATX power supply (HP p/n: 633187-003with any industry 24-pin ATX power supply but watch its dimensions for fit.

Please verify the p/n and wattage of your power supply.  As far as I can tell, this power supply comes with two 6-pin PCIe power cables.  Please verify this also.

In terms of processor upgrading, I would highly recommend the i7-4790 (3.60 GHz to 4.00 GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Threads) which has an 84-watt TDP, or the i7-4790K (4.00 GHz to 4.40 GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Threads), which has only a slightly higher 88-watt TDP.

You can get an i7-4790 processor for as cheap as $46 via eBay. An i7-4790K sells for about twice as much via eBay.

Make sure to max out your RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, Non-EEC, Unbuffered, UDIMM, 204-pin RAM.

Make sure that you upgrade your primary (boot) drive to an SSD if you haven't done so already.

With a 460-watt power supply, you could easily power an HP (or Dell-branded) GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6, which you can purchase starting around $150 via eBay. Please be advised that this graphics card requires an 8-pin (6+2)-PCIe power cable, but if your PSU has two 6-pin PCIe power cables, all you would have to do is to get a dual 6-pin PCIe to 8-pin PCIe adapter cable to make this work.

Anyway, awaiting your feedback what exactly you want, what your budget is, and for any other questions you may have.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
