HP ENVY Desktop - 750-615rz

I really don't do a tremendous amount of gaming anymore but do have several that I would like to try. Unfortunately my graphics card struggles even on the lowest settings. This desktop has worked FLAWLESSLY since I purchased it and really don't see the need to buy a new one (unless the GC/PS is cost-prohibitive). Example: Subnautica. It loads and I can run it for a little bit but once things start getting more involved, it hangs and crashes. I tried it on mid-intense settings at first and it was having a hard time so dropped the settings to basic and was able to play a bit more before it obviously started having a hard time (I could hear it) and would still freeze and crash. I think upgrading to a 500w PSU and a better GPU will get it past that hump. Any recs?

@Kcferret,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

According to the specs, your HP ENVY Desktop - 750-615rz (X6B96AA) is powered by a 300-watt ATX (24-pin) power supply and is fitted with the Basswood motherboard (SSID: 8399).

Yes, upgrade your power supply with a 500-watt ATX power supply, and one of the very best/affordable graphics card upgrades to consider would be this GTX 1660 Ti purchase option under $155: https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-06G-P4-1667-KR-GeForce-Gaming-Renewed/dp/B08ZNNVR8R/ref=sr_1_4?crid=JW2S....

You'll find the graphics card improvement to your liking compared with your RX 550: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti-vs-AMD-RX-550/4037vs3925.

Btw, I would recommend that you upgrade your processor to the Ryzen 7 1700 (8-Cores, 16-Threads, 3.00 GHZ up to 3.70 GHz, 65-watt TDP), which you can purchase inexpensively under $50 via eBay, such as this purchase option via a trusted, top-rated eBay Seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/167479165130?_skw=Ryzen+7+1700&itmmeta=01JZNRR69476G5349V6N018DMZ&hash=item....

I would also recommend a minimum of 2x8GB of RAM.

Kind Regards,

Excellent! Thank you! I realized after reading your response that I had put AMD Ryzen 3 when it's actually a 5 but if the 8 is that reasonable, I will probably still look at that option too!

Annnd I did it again,  Ryzen 7, not 8 haha. It's been a long week already...

@Kcferret,

You are welcome -and no worries, you're just fine!

Yes, I would still suggest you consider upgrading your processor, if only because the Ryzen 7 1700 are priced very competitively these days.

If you want to upgrade your CPU, let me know if you need any additional guidance for that.

Kind Regards,
