One of those sockets supports devices like a WiFi adapter, while the other socket supports a M.2 SSD.

The difference in speed between a SATA SSD and a M.2 SSD is significant, from doggone fast to holy-crap-on-a-cracker fast.
Consider the speeds attained by either of these drives on my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF:
