HP Omen Desktop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good evening,

I recently purchased a XPG SX7000 m.2 2280 PCIe Gen3x4 SSD to upgrade my HP desktop to be faster. I am fairly confident that I plugged it into the correct slot on the motherboard, because it was marked as "m.2 SSD" and was the only m.2 slot that had enough space to fit my SSD. Whenever I check my disk management, I don't see the m.2 SSD anywhere:

Also, I don't believe the drivers are correct, because the device shows up with a yellow exclamation point called "Standard NVM Express Controller":

I tried looking for drivers for the m.2 SSD device on the XPG and ADATA websites, but there is no software for this piece of equipment. I updated my chipset drivers and BIOS revision from the HP website, and still m.2 SSD doesn't work. I'm running out of ideas. I was wondering if anyone knows whether my motherboard is capable of running this m.2 SSD or if there are drivers out there for this SSD.

My desktop model is an HP Omen Desktop PC - 870-244:

Any help will be much appreciated! Let me know if I'm missing any information that would be needed to help.

Thank you!

The problem you are facing is that the motherboard in your desktop does not support NVMe SSD products.

The funny thing is that I got it to appear twice on disk management when I first installed it, but I never got it to come back again. I'm currently completing an RMA form for the m.2 SSD. Do you have any references that the motherboard doesn't support NVMe? I couldn't find any info on my products page.

Thank you!

@EyeKanSpelGude

There are no HP references for the Thimphu-k motherboard showing support for NVMe m.2 SSDs.  I only see references showing that 2.5" SSD were used with this motherboard.

I suggest that you install the latest HP diagnostics.HP Hardware Diagnostics

Tap F2 after power on and then System Information-->Hard Drive Information when you have the m.2 device installed.  What type of HD does the BIOS indicate?  Then back up to the main menu and run component tests of the hard drives. You should then be able to select which HD you wish to run diagnostic programs.

Thanks for the tip Dave! I followed your steps to the F2 Hard Drive Information and I didn't see the m.2 SSD in there; only my 1TB HDD. I requested a return of the SSD and will be exchanging it for a m.2 SATA SSD.

Thank you!
