Hi, like the OP I have an HP 290-p0014 and want to have a fast boot disk. I'd like to confirm a couple of issues for this machine so that I do not buy the wrong parts.

1) Will the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW) work on the motherboard socket?

2) As above configuration, is it limited to X2 transfer speeds?

3) As above configuration, can it be used as a boot disk?

4) Does this config disable any of the other two SATA sockets?

Regarding the StarTech.com PEX4M2E1 M.2 Adapter - x4 PCIe 3.0 NVMe --

5) Will the Samsung 970 EVO 1YB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW) work on the this board?

6) Can you confirm X4 speeds?

7) Can you confirm use of SSD as a boot disk?

😎 Does this config affect the SATA sockets?

9) Did you notice the difference between X2 and X4 in regard to boot time and general operation?

I am only interested in getting confirmation from 290-p0014 owners who have tried the above configurations. Unfortunately, without solid confirmed specs by HP, the only reliable sources of info are 290-p0014 owners or my own experimentation. Whatever happened to ANSI standards! (that's retorical, no answer needed)

Greatly appreciate you insight and comments.

Hi Lan_Rover,

All conditions in this thread should apply to your PC if the MB in your PC is identical to the OP's MB.

You should start a new thread for the best results.

Hi,

you seem to know a lo about the HP melo mtherboard, can you help me with my issue?

I just installed the same Samsung 970 EVO on the M.2. Samsung Magician tells me that everything is fine.

The problem is, I cannot make the SSD the main boot device. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

I posted the question here as well:

Thanks

You probably just need to go into boot cofig and change them around so the SSD is your boot drive.  You can do that in the boot menu on startup.   You will need to clone your os onto the SSD.  Did you already do that?

I did a clean Windows installation on the SSD, but wen I access the BIOS I cannot choose the SSD as boot dev ice

Hi,

I finally managed to use the SSD as boot device, and wanted to give feedback here.

I still dont know why or what went wrong but the fact is:  trying to do a clean WIn 10 installation on the SSD did not work in any way, Windows was installed but there was no way that the BIOS recognized the SSD as boot device.

What finally worked was cloning the HDD to the SDD. In that way the SSD is visible in the BIOS and now windows starts from the SSD and everything works fine.

So one thing is clear for me: no compatibility issues between the Menlo Maninboard and the Samsung SSD 970 EVO, which I feared at the beginning.

For the Windows installation, I created a USB stick with the Media Creator Tool. The problem seems to be there but what it is exactly I don't know...
