Trying to swap the original 256 Mb M2 for a 2 Tb Crucial P5 Plus. Crucial swears it is compatible. Clean format the new M2 as NTFS. Used Acronis True ImageMicron_39939 to clone the drive 1st time. Changed the boot drive in BIOS. Pressed the power button. Went straight into Automatic Repair. Tried a couple of options there. Same result. Reinstalled the original M2. Booted up no problems.
2nd try, I used Macrium's Reflect to put a clean image of the original M2 on the new M2. Mounted the new M2. Changed the boot drive in BIOS. Pressed the power button. Straight into Automatic Repair again. Reinstalled the original M2. Booted up no problems.
Did a similar upgrade on my HP Probook not long ago. Worked like a charm.
What am I forgetting, doing wrong?
Thanks.

I recommend that you try both of these options:
1. You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC on the new SSD.
Here is an info link for how to use the utility. You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.
HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps
If you want to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.
Your PC's product number is: 6YR43AA#ABA
2. Use the Microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable USB installation flash drive to clean install W10 on the new SSD.
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

When you changed the boot order did you select the Windows Boot manager or did you select the SSD?

Appreciate the prompt response. Thank you. I have one followup question. In my HP Support Assistant account which I don't check as much as I should, I found notice of an available BIOS update (SoftPaq# sp111997 V F.30) from October 2023 that failed installation then and failed again today. I'm wondering if whatever caused this BIOS update to fail is a contributing factor in the SSD clone failure. Any thoughts/guidance for manual installation of this BIOS update? Thanks again.

You're very welcome.
I doubt a BIOS update would resolve the cloning problem.
Personally, I think you are playing with fire trying to get a failed BIOS update to install and I would have ignored the update.
This is the latest BIOS update HP has for your PC:

There is a way to update the BIOS via a USB flash drive.
Read through this link and the second section provides instructions for how to update the BIOS manually from a USB Flash drive (outside of Windows)
