HP Pavillion 550-103

I believe the front USB3 was unused on this model of motherboard, at least the front USB on the model look like they are USB2, however, there is an internal USB3 connector...I have connected to this, and enabled all the USB in the bios, however, the port doesn't connect to my devices..and after searching, I'm not the only one. this is a cut down board, so it could just be redundant, but, it is detailed, on the relating page that, there are in fact 2 functioning internal USB3 ports, that are the F_USB1 and F_USB2, that I have connected to the front USB3 (obviously a rebuild). There is no manual to this motherboard.

This is the Motherboard here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-550-300-desktop-pc-series/10734563/model/10921955/d...

right at the bottom in the subsection "I/O Ports and Jumpers > Jumpers", there is a image as shown here :

this image shows the jumpers, but only to clear, battery and password, however, located middle bottom is ,a strip of 4 pins, then a space, then 1 pin...

1) is this the jumper to enable the front usb3?

2) if so, then, what manor of jumper would be required for this?

3) if that's not what it is, then what is its purpose?

4) there is some other way of enabling the internal USB3?

5) I am on bios 0.11a, would updating this fix the issue? (im on ubuntu, so this would be complicated)

Thanks for taking a look 🙂

1. Not a "jumper", but a "connection block" for a 6-pin USB cable to connect to one USB3 socket on the front panel.

2. Not "manor", but "manner". You need a 6-pin USB cable.

3. It is labelled as "USB3". I assume that the labeling is correct.

4. No.

5. I generally AVOID trying BIOS-update. Too many posts within this forum have reported failed BIOS-updates that have produced a "bricked" motherboard. Also, I really doubt that updating the BIOS will have any effect. However, some of the HP BIOS-updates provide a method to create bootable CD media. If you are "adventurous", boot from that media, and update the BIOS.

1/2/3 ) OK, so its a special half-internal-usb3, and presumably the front panel is therefore , 1 usb2 and 1 usb3.

4 ) you sound certain, I guess I trust your wisdom, just dont understand why its there, when all other redundant parts are removed.

5 ) It wont boot with the media burned onto a stick, I tried, with and without, legacy. only way is to boot from uefi os, that is correct to the application, im guessing.

thanks for your input.

Im still interested if anyone has updated the bios of this board, and then, as a result, had success with enabling the internal usb, or if the better bios provides any significant advantages.
