HP 8300 USDT
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I have been told many things from many people. However, i can't find an actual official answer. Assuming i have the 180w PSU, does the MXM slot in this PC support ONLY the AMD Radeon HD 7650A 2GB DDR3 MXM 3.0A card. Or can i use any 3.0A card?

Thank you 😄

Hi,

Usually HP would limit the MXM card to 35 watts or less. MMX cards are available on Ebay.

Perhaps you might want to upgrade the processor to the Intel i7-3770s and then see if you really need a MMX  card at all.

"Assume" is a bad word so check the PSU rating.

I bought this to use as an emulator box. It runs very well but i need a little GPU boost to use the good shaders in retroarch. Im not sure going from Intel HD 2500 to 4000 would be enough of a boost.

EDIT: also, cheapest i7-3770s i see on eBay is $194 CAD 😕

EDIT: By assume i meant the reader should assume i have that PSU.

Hi,

Look here at the comparison between the HD 4000 and the HD 2500.

Keep in mind that the processor upgrade is also going help a lot.

I typically don't assume anything as many times information is not correct.:smileysurprised:

Looks like the 4000 is about as much of an upgrade as some of the cheap 2GB MXM 3.0a cards i see on ebay. For about 4 times the price. The i5 is more than powerful enough for what i need. It barely breaks a sweat. GPU is what i need to run some of the more taxing CRT shaders. Which is why i need to know if any 3.0a card (in the right wattage range) will work. People keep telling my HP likes to block stuff at the BIOS level.

Hi,

The HP specifications and parts does show another MMX card for your PC.  It's more of a CAD/CAM type of card.

I wanted to let eveyrone know that there is a very good MXM video card upgrade that works great on the 8300 Elite USDT computer. It is the Nvidia Quadro M600M. uses 2 GB of GDDR5 It uses only 30 watts (28nm technology) 3.0 type A.  The M600M I believe is the same chip as the GTX 750 ti but has half the cores disabled. It is around 15% slower than the gt-1030. As far as a heat sink just buy a AMD HD 5450 (with heatsink) on Ebay for less than $8.00 (as of this writing) Just remove the heatsink and black plate and place on the Quadro M600M. It works great. I bought my M600M on Amazon for $102.  MY PC has 16g GB of CAS Latency 9 1600 Mhz ram works well. Want to point out the Msata port on this computer is only Sata 2 if you want to use the faster Sata 3 you need to use an SSD on the 2.5" port. My machine also has the i7-3770s  processor. the AMD 7650a is only about 35% faster than the build on HD 4000 in the i7-3770s the M600M is aobut 2.35 times faster than the 7650A (huge upgrade) Never use the HD 5450 MXM on this machine it is slower than what is build in to the i5 or i7 processor.  there is also a M1000M MXM it is 25% faster than the M600M but it uses 40 watts. Not sure if the heatink or the motherboard will work with anything more than 35 watts, (your risk). also I did not find a good price on a used M1000M There is also a new GTX 1030 MXM (30 watts) chip made to work in the 3.0 type A. but those are only found new and did not price one. they also make a Type A for the 1050 (50 watts) and 1050ti (60 watts). but these later two I am sure will over tax the motheboard and heatsink. Another option is to use an adapter to adapt the mini pcie X1 slot to an external Pcie x16 powered slot to run a GTX 1050 ti I have seen this work well. But I chose to have something all self contained in this box. You can also upgrade the Built in CD to a Blueray. Of course you have to use the higher watt power supply to use the MXM video card. Also when you install the Nvidia drivers disable the 3D feature, it is enabled by default.I hope this information helps. I believe I am the first one to discover the M600M works in the 8300 and post information about it. If you would like to see onlice performance results of this video card I uploaded to Performance Test Benchmark online just install the app and do a search for the HP Elite 8300 Elite USDT. My video results are about 3 times faster than the 7650A. It would appear HP does not look at the Vbios to see if the card is acceptable at least not in the 8300 USDT.
