I have a hp pavilion desktop but its fairly slow, (8gb ram to be precise). To solve this problem I know i must buy more ram but I don't know what the max installable ram is, and I wouldn't like to fry the motherboard while experimenting.

You did not mention your desktop model or product ID but I assume it is similar to the one @Prométhée mentioned here

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/baker-rev-a-m11/td-p/8057538

That system has space for a pair of 8gb ram as described here

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-desktop-pc-tg01-1000i/32480786/model/2100382...

.  I would advise getting the same manufacturer ram and suspect eBay will have it

You can use CPU-Z to get the manufacturer and description of the memory module.  You can also take the system apart to verify and get the RAM model.

@DatGaminKid,

As per Baker motherboard's specs (HP Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, Baker | HP® Customer Support), you can add up to 2 x 16GB DDR4 UDIMM (Unbuffered) 288-pin PC4-23400 (2933 MHz) RAM sticks.

Hope this helps.

as @NonSequitur777 wrote, you may be able to upgrade to 32gb.  I suspect you can sell your existing 8gb.  If you do decide to go for the larger ram be sure to use a memory finder to get the correct type.  Kingston has a memory finder that is good.

Frequently the cheapest ram does not work because it uses new and higher density chips which the BIOS cannot handle.
