I just purchased a new HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0050.
It comes with 8 Gig of memory, but I am thinking of upgrading it to 16 Gig since I do use some big spreadsheets and do a bit of photo editing (nothing super high-end).
I opened it up and peeked inside, and it looks like there are two slots for memory and that the first slot is filled and the second is empty. So, I was thinking I could just purchase a second 8 Gig memory card and put it in and that would be it.
I did a bit of searching online, and I found a company called "crucial" which seems to have lots of "compatible" memory chips for this computer:
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/pavilion-590-p0050
I guess easiest would be to purchase another 8 Gig card and put it into the second slot.
But when I hit "more" and look at all the options, it looks like there are actually different single 8 Gig memory cards, and not sure which is the correct one.
Here are the links:
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-590-p0050/CT12476227
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-590-p0050/CT12476265
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-590-p0050/CT14190309
The only difference I can see in the specs is that they have a different "CL" number, but I have no idea what that is.
The prices are all pretty close.. in fact the first two look to be the same prices.. but I want t ensure that whatever I put in is compatible with the existing memory and will work with the system.
Which one should I choose?
Regards,
Michael

Hi, Michael:
Looking at the specs for your PC it comes with a single 8 GB DDR4-2666 memory module.
So you would want this one.
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/pavilion-590-p0050/CT12476265
PC 2400 would slow the PC's memory speed down, and PC 3200 wouldn't do anything to increase it since the processor can only run the memory at 2666 Mhz.

Paul,
Thanks so much for the fast response.
Is the "crucial" memory chip a good one? It is just one that I found by google search.
Is there another manufacturer/model I should consider instead of "crucial"?
Does HP sell these memory chips as well (haven't found it yet on the HP site).
Just looking for a good balance of value and performance.
Regards,
Michael

You're very welcome, Michael.
Crucial is a good brand.
The actual memory chips are made by Micron Technology, a large memory chip manufacturer.
No doubt some of those chips are found in HP products.
I was given an older Dell Optiplex business desktop PC (4th gen core processor), and it had no hard drive or memory.
So, I did the same thing you did...went to the Crucial website, found what they listed was compatible and then I googled the part number and found the same part number for $10 less for a pair on NewEgg.com.
Needing 4 of them, that saved me $20.
Since Crucial guarantees compatibility, I figured I couldn't go wrong, and when the memory arrived, it worked just fine.
I had also used Crucial memory in a HP 350 G1 business notebook. Wanted to upgrade from 4 to 16 GB of memory and it worked fine.
If you want the exact same memory chip that is in there now, you can't buy it from HP.
You can buy it from this vendor, but I really can't see paying $76.00 for it.

Paul,
Thanks so much.
I will pick-up this memory chip.
Anything I need to do in the BIOS to make it "recognize" the new memory, or when I boot it up, will it just "recognize" it and all set?
My system also has the Intel Optame memory card, so do I need to change any configuration with that, or again, will it just recognize the additional memory and be fine.
Thanks.
Michael

Anytime, Michael.
Glad to have been of assistance.
As long as you have firmly seated the new memory module, there is nothing else you need to do.
The PC will automatically pick up the presence of the new memory module.
Some PC's may report that the amount of system memory has changed and to press F1 to continue, or words to that effect.
