HP ENVY 14-3100el SPECTRE Notebook PC
Linux

Hello everyone, I'm new here.

I have this trusty old banger, and i'd like to repurpose it as an experimental linux machine. It's memory has already been updraded to 8gb, but I would like to upgrade it further to 16gb.

I found a suitable 16g sodimm module for it, but 16gb is beyond the maximum supported memory of 8gb.

My question is, has anyone tried this before? How do you estimate the success rate of this upgrade?

Thanks!

Hi:

I would speculate that a single 16 GB memory chip wouldn't work.

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the max memory is 1 x 8 GB.

I don't know anything about Linux, but folks tell me that there is a command you can run to get a report of the maximum memory the PC can support.

With one memory slot if the report indicates 32 GB, then it may be possible for a single 16 GB memory chip to work.

If it reports 16 GB, then the chances of a 16 GB chip working are not good.

The report will probably pick up the circuitry for the nonexistent second memory slot.
