HP ENVY Phoenix 810-270st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have HP ENVY Phoenix 810-270st desktop. It has two memory slots.

1. The initial config was 16 GB ( Samsung 2x8GB). One memory module turned out to be bad. I need to replace. Can i replace one module with any other brand of 8 Gb module .

2. Can I opt to go for 2x16 GB to make it 32 GB now. Aany suggested brand which is not very expensive

Thanks

If you replace the bad 8 GB module wth other than an identical module the desktop PC may not boot into Windows.

It may  also only show 8GB of available memory. Armed with that knowlege, you now know that replacing both modules is a better option.

Correction. 16gb supported, NOT 32 gb

Here is a link to guaranteed compatible memory modules sold by Crucial memory

Most recommend that the memory be in matched pairs.  So only replace the bad stick if you can find an identical unit.

Here is the support page for the motherboard.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03605561

It shows 4 memory slots - two on each side of the CPU socket.  It also states

  • Four-channel memory architecture
  • Four 240-pin DDR3 DIMM sockets
  • Supports DDR3 DIMMs
    • PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
    • PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600)
  • Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Supports 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB DIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit* systems
  • Supports up to 32 GB on 64-bit systems

If, after rechecking what you have, it still only has two memory slots, then it probably will not support the 16Gb memory per stick.

Sorry @erico we were both replying at the same time

If you are unsure as to what memory to buy, using the Crucial site and buying from their guaranteed compatible memory modules as @erico states is probably a good idea.  That way it is guaranteed compatible memory modules.
