I purchased the computer with one 4 gigabyte sodimm installed. I'm tired of watching it thrash and want to upgrade the memory. It has two memory slots, so, two questions:
What's the maximum amount of ram it will take?
What are the right chip specifics?
Thank you,
Dee

@Dee_Marshall , welcome to the forum.
Here is the Motherboard Specifications page for the computer: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-desktop-pc-590-p0000a/19390500/model/30734594/docum...
Look at the section titled "Memory upgrade information" for the specifications of the memory and the maximum amount (32 GB). You should use CPU-Z to find the manufacturer and timings of the current memory: https://download.cnet.com/CPU-Z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html
It is not good to mix brands of memory. Therefore, once you find the manufacturer of the current memory you can buy a DIMM that matches. However, I believe that it will be best to remove the current memory and replace it with two matching DIMMS. The motherboard supports Dual Channel Memory Architecture. The matching pairs are necessary for this to work. It will increase system performance.
The best upgrade that you can make is a SSD boot drive. It will decrease boot times and increase the speed of opening apps. There is a M.2, SSD, socket on the motherboard: One M.2 socket 3, key M.

Thank you, that was helpful. I have an SSD drive here if it still works although the problem so far has been too many programs using too much memory at startup. I had also seen the Sunflower description page but it wasn't as trustworthy as it appeared. Look at the maximum memory of 32 as compared to 2 slots that can take up only 8 gig each. The numbers didn't add up.
You did answer my question handily and I'll be ordering two 8 gig 260 pin sodimms today and that should solve my problem. All of my computers for the past 20 years or so have been homebuilts and I knew just what I was getting. The lack of documentation this time threw me for a loop.
Thanks again!
Dee
