HP Compag dc5850 sff

My machine has 4,1 gb ram sticks.I have 4,2 gb sticks for upgrade which is supposed to be allowed for this machine.The machine will run with 2,2 gb sticks but not 4 and gives red flashing light and 5 beeps.

The beep code references a memory issue.  Could be a bad module. In order to find the problem, you need to test each module separately.   It's going to be laborous with al the power down precautions.   Place a single module in the XMM 4 slot.  This is the memory slot farthest way from the CPU chip.  This test' s each module.  Use no other slot.  

 

If each module worked, then keep a module in the XMM4 slot. Add a module to the XMM3 slot.  IF that works, you have 2 verified slots that do work.  This gets confusing, because you added a module to Channel A black XMM3 and a module to Channel B black XMM4.   Pg 3-3 and 3-4  of the Illustrated guide.

This system is feedback driven thru Solution and Kudo flags. It's the only means of knowing if you have been served. Please click Accept as Solution, if your problem is solved. To say THANK YOU, press the "thumbs up symbol" to render a KUDO. You can render both Solution and KUDO..

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quick.The link you supplied helped me to understand a lot better.It ended up the one stick didn't work on #1 slot but I put in one of my old 1 gig sticks and it worked.I have 7 gb ram which is fine with me.  Thanks again.
