HP ENVY 700-214

Hello. I wanted to upgrade the CPU for my computer an ENVY 700-214 (seen here ) I went from the i5-4440 to an i7-4790, I thought I was all set because it was on the approved list, but when I start up I get no signal to the monitor. Replacing my original CPU allows me to see again. Hearing about BIOS updates (which I'd never done in all the years I've had it), I updated the BIOS to AMI 80.23 7/6/2016.

I'm still leaning towards a BIOS problem. I only say that because I can't find what the final BIOS update would be for this motherboard. I'm wondering if there's a way to find it specific to my motherboard or some sort of way to verify "This CPU on this Motherboard needs at least BIOS ______"

Or other ideas would be welcomed. Many thanks!

I also wanted to add that this thread fits me to a T. Same PC same old card, new card, everything . I updated my BIOS to AMI 80.23 7/6/2016. Still unable to boot up with the i7. I pulled the CMOS battery for 20 minutes, then tried to start with the i7. Nothing. I can start with the i5 still.

@Nogoria,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

An interesting issue, since an i7-4790 is certainly compatible with your HP ENVY 700-214 Desktop PC (F3E00AA), as fitted with a Memphis-B motherboard (SSID: 2AF7), as shown by this User, for example: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/47513183.

As a matter of fact, the BIOS version to be able to run an i7-4790 is irrelevant, as HP System 700-214 Users with an i7-4790 -as seen here: UserBenchmark: HP 700-214 Compatible Components, were able to make it work with at least these BIOS versions:

BIOS dates: 20140218, 20140627, 20141031 and your most recent version: 20160706.

The problem, therefore, could be the i7-4790 itself.  Please check the CPU be means of a magnifying glass, and check for any damage and/or discolorations. See if you can still swap/return this processor and get an identical processor and try again.

Kind Regards,
